There are very few occasions when you ask your makeup to work quite as hard as it does on your wedding day. I know because I've been there myself; not just once, but three times!
My husband and I married in the sunshine on the beautiful Greek island of Kos, where the temperature climbed well into the thirties and the air felt thick with warmth from the moment I stepped outside. A month before, we had our legal ceremony closer to home in Mold, before finally gathering all of our family and friends for a wedding party in Chester. Three dresses, three celebrations, countless hugs, happy tears, dancing, photographs... and one very important expectation: I wanted to look like me from the first glimpse in the mirror until the final song of the evening.
Standing in front of the camera in 35°C heat taught me something that years of working as a bridal makeup artist had already begun to confirm. Beautiful bridal makeup isn't about wearing more makeup. It's about wearing the right makeup, prepared on the right skin, applied in the right way.

Skin: Skincare and Skin Preparation
When I was preparing for my own wedding, I found myself thinking less about makeup and far more about my skin. That's why I always tell my brides that the weeks before the wedding matter just as much as the wedding morning itself.
A consistent skincare routine will always outperform a cupboard full of last-minute miracle products. Your wedding isn't the time to experiment with harsh exfoliants or trending active ingredients. Instead, think of your skin as something you're gently nurturing rather than trying to "fix". Professional artists consistently stress that hydrated, well-prepared skin provides the best canvas for long-lasting makeup.
On the morning itself, preparation is equally important. Cleansing away overnight skincare, using lightweight hydration that's appropriate for your skin type and allowing each product to absorb properly gives makeup something to grip to, rather than slide across. Makeup artists also recommend letting skincare settle before moving on to complexion products instead of rushing straight in.
Think of skincare as laying the foundations of a house. If they're solid, everything built on top becomes easier.
Skill: Makeup Application & Product Know-How
How you apply your makeup and the products themselves can determine the longevity of your makeup - it is all about applying the right products, in the right way. I could write for hours on this subject as longevity comes from lots of tiny decisions working together.
I will only invest in, and use, products I know and trust. Years of research, trialling and testing new launches and being a little bit obsessed with reviews, content and makeup masterclasses, ensures my kit is full of products known to last.

When it comes to application, there are some non-negotiables; primer to act as the bond between your skincare and makeup, using cream and powder in harmony where appropriate, applying powder only where it's genuinely needed instead of mattifying the whole face, choosing formulas that work with your skin rather than against it and building everything in light layers before gently locking it into place.
Seal: Setting Spray & Strategy
Every bride asks me which setting spray I use.
Everything I’ve mentioned leads up to this point and, of course, a professional setting spray is usually the final step. It’s time to ask my bride to close her eyes as I lock in the makeup. For those not used to using setting sprays, I describe them as ‘hairspray for the face’ - there to literally ‘set’ everything. There are so many formulas available too, you can strategically use them to bring back some glow, or to mattify if you prefer this final finish.
I also send every bride away with a tiny touch-up plan. Not because I expect their makeup to disappear, but because after twelve hours of kissing relatives, drinking champagne and dancing, a fresh lipstick and a quick blot are usually all that's needed.
